Can I port my number from J2? (Onebox, Efax, and others) Print

Revised November 16, 2012

J2 Communications, the owner of Onebox.com and Efax.com has taken the position they are the owner of all of the telephone numbers on their system and they are not obligated to comply with the FCC regulations on number porting.  This position is unique from virtually every other service provider in the United States and it is unclear how legitimate this position is.

In general if you ported your number into J2 they will allow you to port it out, but not without requiring you to jump through several hoops as detailed in fine print in their user agreements.  They also seem to be allowing port-outs of toll free numbers under some situations.

Please review the user agreements for these services and be aware of their restrictions before submitting your port request.  While we will endeavor to get the numbers for you, we cannot help you comply with their terms and conditions.  And be aware that if we attempt to port out a number they have been known to "flip back" those numbers to them, turn them off, and there is little or nothing that WholesalePBX can do to assist you in such a case.  There is some risk.

Onebox Terms and Conditions:  http://www.onebox.com/terms.asp   (see section 16)
Efax Terms and Conditions:  http://home.efax.com/customerAgreements/efax/customerAgreement_en.html   (see section 21)

While we believe J2's position is in violation of FCC regulations, practical experience tells us that porting numbers out from this provider is very painful at best and impossible at worst.  Encourage your customer to consider allowing us to find new telephone numbers for them that can be kept and ported in the future.
